Fecal examinations can reveal potential digestive issues from diarrhea to worms in the stool. They are recommended on a case-by-case basis. We recommend deworming your cat at least 3-4 times per year (ideally monthly in the summer). It will prevent any possible complications from intestinal parasites.
Animal Medical Centre North does offer in-house fecal screening. If more diagnostics are needed, we will send it out to an external lab. Our veterinarians can discuss diagnostic options based on your pet’s case.
The test can reveal a multitude of things from adult worm eggs to bacterial overload. Every animal is unique, so each fecal screen can disclose an array of information. It can also aid the veterinarian in choosing which medications to prescribe.
Fecal screens consist of doing a direct smear, which is then stained and observed under a microscope. We may also add a special solution to the fecal sample causing eggs to float which may then be observed with a microscope.
Usually, a fresh sample is preferred as it is easier to identify the parasites. It is best to use a litter box with no litter, so it will not contaminate the sample.
