Keep your cat healthy through regular deworming to prevent health issues caused by parasites.
Intestinal worms are quite common in cats, especially kittens because some worms can pass from the mother to the kitten. We recommend regular deworming to keep your cat in top health. Another reason for deworming your cat is that some worms can be passed on to humans. Regular deworming is a safe and easy way to protect against infestations in cats and humans.
Roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms are the most commonly seen intestinal parasites found in cats. These parasites can be seen in the animal’s vomit or feces. Tapeworms can also be found in segments stuck to the hair around the anus. Contact our clinic if you have any questions or concerns about intestinal parasites in your cat.
Parasite detection can be tricky in otherwise healthy adult cats, which is why prevention is highly recommended. However, if you do suspect worms, some signs to watch for are lethargy, weight-loss, pot belly appearance, vomiting worms or diarrhea. If your cat is infested with tapeworms, you may also see small segments of worms stuck to the hairs around the anus.
Worms can pass from cats to humans. The most common route of infection is ingesting the eggs which are passed through the feces. This can happen in different ways, but one example is improperly washing fruits and vegetables that have come into contact with infected feces. The most commonly infested people are children. The best defence is to always wash your hands and food well and stay on top of prevention procedures for your cat.
Deworming schedules vary widely depending on age and lifestyle. Kittens should be dewormed at least twice, while adult cats can range from monthly to annually schedules depending on the lifestyle. Deworming schedules are discussed in the cat’s yearly health exam.
Side effects are not very common but may include vomiting and diarrhea, which may consist of worms depending on the severity of the infestation.
